Pocklington at War
This book is the definitive account of Pocklington at war in World War 2.

Pocklington at war 2nd ed.

Pocklington at War - *NEW 2nd Edition*

As the great events of the Second World War played themselves out, the citizens of a small East Yorkshire market town had to cope with all the changes brought by the war including the building of a huge Bomber Command airfield on its doorstep. This book tells the story of how the people of Pocklington came to terms with the war and its stress and anxiety by their practical involvement. Their sympathy for the servicemen and particularly the airmen who risked their lives every flight led to a generosity of spirit which, in the midst of war and death, was life-enhancing for all concerned.

The first edition of the book was such a success, it quickly sold out and has been unavailable for a few years. It was decided a reprint and update was appropriate..

"Pocklington at War" was first published sixty-five years after the end of the Second World War based on research in local primary sources and on the recollections of people who lived in Pocklington during the war. The significant changes in the second edition include additional photographs and information which has come to light in recent years particularly about the armed forces based in the town during the preparations for D-Day.

Special thanks are due to Phil Gilbank for his knowledgeable textual amendments particularly in Chapter 8. For their generous financial support for republishing the book, thanks go to Jo Green and the Committee of the Pocklington & District Local History Group and to Pocklington Town Council.
