This is the second edition of 'A Pocklington History & Heritage Trail' first produced by the Pocklington & District History Group in 2008. Since the original publication Pocklington's heritage has been greatly enhanced and expanded, with development-led archaeology uncovering prehistoric finds of national importance. This revised edition includes a little of that new information plus some corrections and rewriting from the first volume. Both editions were written and researched by Phil Gilbank, with photographs provided by Andrew Sefton and Phil Gilbank. This has a map and walk around the town of Pocklington complete with historical commentary for each stop along the route which will take a gentle hour and is not strenuous.
Front cover picture: Beast Fair Bridge, Pocklington circa. 1820, painted by 19th century journeyman artist, George Nicholson. This picture captures the transition of Pocklington from the old world to the new, with a traditional thatched cottage perched precariously on one side of the beck; and a group of solid, tiled and brick buildings newly built over the bridge, nearer the town centre. The scene was painted from a position near the current library.
