The forgotten faces of Pocklington
In the late Victorian times Michael Tayleure set up his photography business in Pocklington after having a successful shop in Middle Street, Driffield. The Driffield business was taken over by Matthew Boak. He arrived in 1870 as recorded by the Congregational Church records. From there he opened a photographic studio, which he seems to have moved around the town. First in West Green, then in Market Place and finally settling in Railway Street. Michael died in 1916 aged 88. His many portraits of people survive in the form of Carte De Visite (CDV), which were small pocket sized photographs that you could give as a gift like a visiting card. Andrew Sefton has a collection of Michael Tayleure CDV's which he has put together over many years and if you can add a name to a face he would be pleased to receive it. The dates assigned are the likely dates the photograph was printed, and not necessarily when it was taken. This was the address of where the studio was at the time of printing. Michael Tayleure advertised reprint copies were available to order. A good example is the 1870s photograph of a lady in black dress later reprinted when he had moved to Railway Street. Please encourage everyone to write a name of the people on the back of every photograph. Thanks to Trevor Brigham for extra information on the East Yorkshire Regiment uniforms.

Boak Shop Driffield

Matthew Boak took over Michael Tayleure's photographic business in Driffield. Tayleure moved to Pocklington in 1870 and started a new photographic business there. Matthew Boak expanded his Driffield business with additional branches in Bridlington Quay and Pickering in 1868.

Mary Gray Rooks (sister of Susannah who married Arthur Pearson Tayleure) b. Jun 1842 in Huggate, married John Allison 9 Sep 1872 in Pocklington, She was daughter of Charles Rooks and Susannah Gray.
She had 4 sons, Charles Henry (1872-1945), George William (1876-1895), Alfred (1877-1961), John Scott (1882-1961). This photograph was most likely taken in 1872 at the time of her marriage.
John Rennard born in 1850 in Millington to George, an agricultural labourer and Jane (nee Mason). George was born in Bishop Wilton and Jane in Hayton. They lived at Grimthorpe Wood Cottages and in the 1861 census, John aged 11, was a scholar. In the 1871 Census John was a farm servant at Dalton Gates Farm, Warter, aged 20, where the head of the house was a Richard Dossey and Margaret his wife. On 22 Jan 1873 aged 22 he married Ann Towse aged 18. Ann was the daughter of David and Elizabeth Towse who kept the Cross Keys Inn, Thixendale. John is by now a farming foreman. In the 1881 he and Ann were living at Hinds House, Raisthorpe with Burdale. His occupation is listed as an agricultural labourer. They already had 5 children and Ann's sister aged 14 was their farm servant and they also had 8 indoor servants. (I haven't figured out how this arrangement worked yet!) In the 1891 census, aged 42 John was a farm foreman, living at Burdale Southwold (part of Wold House Farm). They now had eight children including my grandmother, Rose, aged four and two servants. In 1901 they moved to Airey Hill, Hunmanby and John's occupation is Agricultural Horse at Hind Farm. They lived as a large extended family, aged 16. Rose is now 14. In 1911 John is now Hind Farm foreman living with Ann, a daughter, son, and grandchild. Ann died on 17 Jul 1920 and John in Sep 1931 in the district of Bridlington aged 81. Info from John Finch.
