| The first confirmed record of a cattle market in New Street was the 1890 OS map which clearly shows the pens. It is not shown on the 1855 OS map or William Watson’s town map. There are earlier references to a cattle market in 1845 but it is not clear where in the town that was. It seems to finish as a regular market in 1958 from the attached newspaper report. The pens and space were still present on the 1970 OS map. There are no surviving pictures of the cattle market and I was given the photograph here as taken at Pocklington Market, but I am doubtful it is. If you have any reminiscences of it or indeed any photographs, please contact us. |
