Bishop Wilton, Past and Present

The Site of the Palace of the Archbishops of York

Introduction

This topic has been closely researched and articles have been published in the Local History Group's Bulletins. But until now the topic has not been explored on this website.

By far the most important account of the results of our research is included in the 36 page Special Publication that has been uploaded to Issuu: The Site of the Archbishops' Palace. This was produced and sold as a printed document to coincide with a series of guided tours conducted in 2011. It is now made available for wider perusal.

Features in the Landscape

The Dating of the Palace Site - although included in the Special Publication mentioned above, this article is reproduced here because it lays out some of the concerns the Local History Group has with the way that English Heritage represents the site in its official literature.

The Layout of the Palace Site - again, although this plan is included in the Special Publication mentioned above, it is important enough to reproduce here. It represents current speculative thinking on how the site might have appeared in the 13th and 14th Centuries based on consideration of numerous aerial photographs and the humps and bumps that currently exist on the ground.

Your attention is brought to an item in the History on the Ground section of this website concerning a man-made feature at the periphery of the Palace Site where it embraces a Water Mill.
