Historical Background

We have been tackling Bishop Wilton's history a bit like jigsaw with the pieces being put together according to the interests of those involved in the Local History Group. Historical fact is mixed with historical speculation; recent history is mixed with ancient history. Some material is based on research and some is based on memory. The words and images assembled here aim to capture some small part of the natural and human aspects of one small crease in the East Yorkshire landscape.

We've split things into 7 categories:

Articles - lengthier items by named contributors, accompanied, as appropriate, by photographs, diagrams and references.

Fragments - scraps of historical information like memories or quotations, which either stand on their own or may form the basis for further research.

In Print - extracts from the press and other publications that relate to Bishop Wilton.

Family History - genealogical research covering both general approaches and specific family trees.

Old Postcards - more than 80 unique postcards of the village have survived (not counting the modern ones). We are lucky that it was so popular with the postcard publishers! The selection shown here (with explanatory text) draws on contributions from many individuals who have either kept them safe for many years or recently collected them.

Photographs - carefully saved family photos; routinely produced school photos; aerial photos; ...

Art & Engravings - not all the surviving Bishop Wilton imagery is photographic.

The War Years - records & memories of World Wars I and II

Most of the material used here has been used in village exhibitions or has appeared in a Local History Bulletin that commenced publication in November 2002 (and eventually achieved a circulation of around 100 copies!).
