Still WatersBy Keith McWilliam previous item | up | next item ... continued from page 2 ... I have searched the newspapers of the day seeking confirmation of his earlier life by way of an obituary but the only reference to his demise was a brief announcement under Death Notices in the York Herald Dated 24th October 1857, which reads:- “On Tuesday 20 inst. After a very tedious and painful illness the Reverend Joseph Shooter, Vicar of Bishop Wilton in this county and of Attenborough Notts.” * The Shooter family vault is situated immediately behind the East window of the church, beneath the large holly tree. The Shooter family vault in St Edith's churchyard. *It was not unusual in those days for a well-respected priest to be awarded more than one parish and receive a stipend for both. The second incumbency he would, as we say today, subcontract out to some minor cleric, in this particular instance Rev James Haycock BA. Of course this would be at a lesser figure than he himself had received for the post. Page 3 of 3 |
