The water levels seem to rise and fall and so I can only assume that most of the wells are fed by underground springs. The wells would originally have been drawn by bucket, with the mechanical pumps added later. I expect that many wells were shared between households. Richard
Sefton pointed out a mound in the front of the Manor House field which
he reckons was one of the earliest village communal wells,
before
