Bishop Wilton, Past and Present

Family History

This section aims to provide general guidance on researching family history along with the outcome of research into specific families. We have been particularly fortunate in receiving material from people outside the village who have information on ancestors who lived in Bishop Wilton in the past.

Churchyard Postcard - at the beginning of the 20th Century, F Slights of Pocklington took a photograph of the church and published a postcard. This postcard is the basis for our latest family history initiative.

Still Waters - A Bishop Wilton Tale of Tragedy, Bravery, Mystery and Faith involving Reverend Joseph Shooter and his family.

Gospel Family History - Research that encompasses Bolton, Barmby Moor and Bishop Wilton

Typhoid - how it affected one Gospel family on the Wolds

An Introduction to FamilY History - Guidance in how to use the Internet and other sources to develop a family tree

Beedham Family History - a Gowthorpe family of 17 children; a steam mill at Bishop Wilton; the A8 submarine disaster

George Brown & Family - A document about George Brown, Tailor & Draper, has been made availble on Issuu. This was produced with the help of his granddaughter, Christine Dinsdale. It was Christine who first identified George for us on a group photograph taken at the dedication of the New Vicarage.

If you see information here that has a bearing on your own family we will be pleased to put you in touch with the individual who provided it.
